The Manager as Coach Program

Teach your managers to coach their people.

Most managers fix problems for their team because it feels quicker. It works for a while, then they become the bottleneck. This two-day programme, run in-house for your organisation, shows them how to coach instead. Most of the time is spent practising.

What this includes

  • Two days, run in-house for your managers
  • Most of the time spent practising
  • Led by an ICF-certified coach
  • A second coach in the room for every practice session
  • Certificate of completion
  • ICF Continuing Coach Education credits applied for

Who it is for

Managers, team leaders and supervisors, whether they are new to managing or have done it for years. No coaching experience needed.

What your managers will be able to do

  • Know when to coach, when to mentor and when to simply give direction
  • Judge whether someone is ready to be coached, and adjust their approach
  • Run a coaching conversation from start to finish, using a simple structure
  • Turn a vague problem into a clear goal, and keep the conversation on it
  • Listen properly: to the facts, to how the person feels and to what matters to them
  • Ask far more than they tell, so their people do the thinking
  • Give honest feedback without damaging trust
  • Help someone who is stuck see their situation differently
  • Work out whether a person sees the problem and wants to act, and coach from there
  • Handle the tricky side of coaching someone they also manage, including confidentiality and when to refer on
  • End every conversation with a commitment, the obstacles named and a date to follow up

A simple structure for every conversation

Managers learn one way to structure a coaching conversation, in four steps, plus four tools to use along the way.

  1. Step 1

    Agree the goal

What does the person want to get out of this conversation?

  2. Step 2

    Explore

Understand the situation before suggesting anything.

  3. Step 3

    Decide

Let the person choose what they will do.

  4. Step 4

    Follow through

Agree the next step and when to check in.

The four tools

  • Curiosity First

Asking good questions instead of giving answers.

  • Outcome Framing

Turning a vague problem into a clear goal.

  • Courageous Feedback

Saying the difficult thing in a way that lands.

  • Shift the Lens

Helping someone see their situation differently.

Mostly practice

Participants coach each other in groups of three on real work situations, taking turns to coach, be coached and observe. A second experienced coach moves between the groups and gives feedback on the spot.

Common questions

What is the Manager as Coach Program?

A two-day LHH programme, run in-house for one organisation at a time in Vietnam, that teaches managers to coach their people instead of fixing everything for them. Managers learn a simple four-step structure for the conversation and four practical tools, and most of the time is spent practising, led by an ICF-certified coach.

Is it a public course?

No. We run it in-house for one organisation at a time, so your managers practise on your own situations. It runs at your offices, or live online if your team is spread out.

Will participants become certified coaches?

No. This is a practical programme for managers, not a coaching qualification. Participants receive a certificate of completion.

Is it ICF accredited?

We have applied for ICF Continuing Coach Education credits and are waiting for ICF to decide. We will update this page when we hear.

Interested in running it?

Tell us about your managers and we will explain how it would work for your team.
